Empire of Cotton (2014) tells the story of cotton, a fluffy plant with a long and complicated past. These slates explain how the cotton industry linked the globe, from Manchester, England, to rural India, and the incredible effect cotton manufacturing has had on the growth of economic systems.

Sven Beckert earned his PhD in history from Columbia University and is now the Laird Bell Professor of American History at Harvard University. Empire of Cotton: A Global History received the Bancroft Prize in 2015 and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2015.
